Wren's Postcard Swap - Arrives in Finland!

Anki: Unna, we got mail!

Unna: Is it from Wren?

Anki: Yes it is! The card came all the way from Isle of Wight.

Unna: Ooh I wanna know what Wren says!

Anki: Wren tells us about lovely beaches and walking paths.

Unna: That sounds fun!

Both: Thank you Wren!

Anki: Now we need to write back to them.

Unna: I know the perfect card!

Unna: Here it is.

Anki: Yes! That’s great!

Anki: Let’s start with saying hello…

Unna: Now it’s ready! High five!

Anki: Yay!

Many thanks to Unna & Anki's person for sending these photos and the story to us to post on our blog

It was a lot of fun!

Postcard Swap - Wren writes some more cards.

Having opened up her Postcard Swap to blogging friends and those on IG, Wren has been busy writing out more cards.

Last week she wrote out three and posted those...

Just put the postcards through the slot.

She now knows that at least two have arrived.

This is another card she has chosen to write and she posted this one at the beginning of the week

Off she goes to the post office again.
She is so pleased it is just up the road from where we live.

Today she sits down and writes out two more.

These are the two she has chosen from her visit to the Needles last month.

She is keeping it a surprise as to who she has sent them to, until she knows they have arrived.

She chooses the first one and writes it.

She has decided on this one for the second card,

and this one for the third.

Cards all written and ready to post.

She posted the cards this morning and hopes they don't take too long to get to her Makie friends.

Some New Postcards.

What are you doing Henry?  Lewis asks.

It is time to update my postcard album Lewis.  Henry says.

You've got some great new cards.  Lewis tells him.

Yes, I've got this one from Minnesota, from the Gregoropolis Gang and those two near your come from Hans' and Angelo's Dad Jesse from his trip to Europe.  Aren't they interesting?  Henry says.

Lewis helps Henry put his cards away.

I think this one is such fun with the fabric skirt on the front.  Henry tells Lewis.

Lewis agrees.

I've actually got to get some postcards sent as well. Henry says to Lewis.  I got them while on the Isle of Wight and when we were down in Cornwall.  I must try and do that this week.

The boys wander off to see if they can find the 'safe place' that the cards have been put in.

Learning about History

Henry was excited to receive a letter today from his friend Sasha from Gregoropolis.

He read it out to Caleb.

Oh look it says here that Sasha has sent us some postcards that are 'a trip through time'. Henry reads.

How exciting, I wonder what he means?  Caleb asks.

They are antique postcards.  Henry tells him as he reads through the letter.  They are postcards of their hometown in the very early 1900s.

Gosh I bet Lewis and Peggy Sue will be interested in these as they may remember what places looked like that long ago!  Caleb says.

They are not THAT old. Henry says.

Well very nearly... Caleb replies.

Henry and Caleb study the first postcard.

This is the Dayton Dry Goods Co  and Raddison Hotel.  The postcard is dated Nov 1913.  Henry says.

See!  Says Caleb.  Lewis and Peggy Sue ARE as old as this card...

Well they don't look it.. Henry replies.

Oh and guess what this must be the place that Sasha said he and Steve first met many years ago..although not as long ago as when this card was sent!

This next one is of the City Hall and Court House.  Sasha wrote that the clocks are actually 18 inches wider than those on Big Ben in London!  Henry tells Caleb.  This postcard is dated 7th January 1908.  Wow that is a long time ago!

This last one is even older as it is dated with two date stamps, September 14th and 15th 1906.  It is of the College Buildings, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. Henry explains to Caleb.

That is over 101 years ago. Caleb gasps.  How exciting to have these postcards in your collection.  You are really lucky Henry.

I know.  Henry says.  Isn't it wonderful to have friends around the world that enjoy the same hobby as me!  Just look at the wonderful stamps on the back and also the names of the people these cards were sent to.  Isn't it amazing.  To think these cards were written so long ago.  What a wonderful piece of history.

Thank you for these wonderful postcards Sasha and Steve.  They are going to take pride of place in my collection.  They are my oldest postcards!

Henry & Peggy Sue Receive a Postcard each.

Yesterday when the envelope from the USA arrived it was addressed to not only Emily but also Henry and Peggy Sue.  So what else was inside it?

A postcard each!

Henry and Peggy Sue were thrilled to get a postcard from Stephen Orange.

Henry reads his out loud to Peggy Sue

"Hello Henry!  Daddys (sic) John and Steve took me to the MN State Fair today..."

What is MN Henry?  Peggy Sue asks.

He means Minnesota Peggy Sue.  It is a shorter way or writing it to save on space.  Henry explains.

Oh, that makes sense then, as you can't fit a lot of words on a postcard unless you write really small.  Peggy Sue says.

Shall I continue?  Henry asks Peggy Sue.

Please do.  She replies.

"We rode the 'Sky Ride' - an exciting, high-in-the-air gondola and the Ye Olde Mill boat and tunnel ride.  That was very dark, but I wasn't afraid.  It seemed like most of the State's population was out at the Fair, but the atmosphere was good - everyone was having a good time.  do you have fairs in England?  Your friend Stephen Orange".

Do we have fairs in England Henry?  Peggy Sue asks.

I am sure we do Peggy Sue, we just haven't been fortunate enough to go to one yet.  Henry replies.

Fairs look like a lot of fun.  Peggy Sue says as she looks at her card. I hope we get to go to one, one day.

Peggy Sue reads the back of her card...

Read it out loud please Peggy Sue.  Henry says.

Hello Peggy Sue!  We are at the Fair today - it's held every year at this time.  WE drove to a special parking lot and then rode a bus right to it.  Daddy John says it saves him from the headache of trying to find parking.  We went to the Miracle of Life barn and saw chicks, baby pigs, a lamb, and other animals that were born during the Fair.  We also saw a woman sculpting a girl's head out of a big block of butter!  Your friend, Stephen Orange.

Wow, that must have been really interesting seeing all the baby animals.  Peggy Sue says to Henry.  Funny though, imagine sculpting a head out of butter!

Both Henry and Peggy Sue found that thought rather amusing!

Henry puts his postcard in his album, and Peggy Sue lets him put hers in it as well 'for safe keeping' she tells him.

Someone has a faraway look on her face!  I think she must be dreaming about 'All the Fun at the Fair' that Stephen Orange had.

There, that should keep them safe.  Henry says.

Isn't it great having someone else who likes to send postcards Peggy Sue?  Henry asks.

It is indeed.  Peggy Sue replies.

Henry's Postcard Album.

Someone was busy today..

Looks like Henry was doing one of his puzzle post cards.

Henry and Laura often exchange postcards, and especially puzzle ones when they can find them.

This is one Henry received some time ago.  He enjoyed putting it together again and re-reading the adventures of Laura and Edmund.

Henry's postcard album arrived today, so he kept this made up to put in his new album.  Now he just has to remember where he put his other puzzle postcards!

In the meantime he has put this postcard, and the postcards received from the Gregoropolis boys, and Laura from her recent trip to the USA in his album.

He enjoys showing Lewis his album and tells him all about his cards.

Henry tries to send postcards to friends every time he goes on holiday, so is thrilled when he receives some.

It is a great way to learn about other parts of the world.  He tells Lewis.
